About Hogsback, South Africa
|
| |
The hamlet of Hogsback nestles in the Amathole mountain range, close to the historic Fort Hare University town of Alice. The Three Hogs which lend their name to the settlement bristle with rocky spines, often covered with mists, clouds, and winter snows. Gaika, (Ngqika) and The Elandsberg mountains flank Hogsback to the North and West.
Crystal clear waters sparkle through clearings, stream through emerald afro-montaine forest and cascade down dark basalt rock faces to the Thyume valley below
Nestling some 1400m above the harsher East Cape landscape, Hogsback is a restful oasis, rich in ecological diversity. Rare Cape Parrots, Loeries, Samango monkeys, as well as plants, insects and even frogs are found.
Set at the heart of early frontier history, the Thyume valley was the seat of the Rarabe Xhosa chiefs. The thickly forested mountain reaches provided sanctuary for the Xhosa clans during the border wars.
Early settlement of Hogsback arose from the development of forestry. The cooler climate also attracted missionaries and teachers from the hot valley below
Hogsback today offers a range of
